Shea Talks 2023 Design Trends on the Today Show
As seen the morning of January 18, on NBC's Today Show, Shea McGee outlines where we're headed in interior design.
19 January 2023 -
In case you missed it, our founder and creative director, Shea McGee, took the stage on NBC’s Today Show to talk all things 2023 design trends, a topic we’ve covered in depth here at Studio McGee (find a deep dive into what we see in our design future in the post, 2023 Design Trends We’re Loving). “We’re helping you clear out the old and bring in the new by incorporating 2023 design trends into your home,” noted host Sheinelle Jones. “We’re thinking spring cleaning,” Shea adds, “I want to get out all of the clutter.” From there, it’s a game of bringing in fresh linens, throws, or small accessory moments that will make your space feel new. “Lastly, I’m all about scents,” Shea notes. “Change out your candles for citrus, sea salt, and florals. It’s easy and simple and it feels amazing.”
Moving into 2023 design trends, Shea talks about Coastal Grandmother as it relates to a broader design trend of nostalgia. We’re seeing plate walls and vintage or found styling elements, as well as gingham and ruffles. Next up, Country Club Chic, which includes one of our favorite forthcoming design trends of anything that involves a sophisticated grandpa, think Ralph Lauren at the polo club. Dark, moody tones, a little bit of plaid and leather, and Americana prep, these are all elements of Country Club Chic. Lastly, pattern on pattern within one room. “If you can’t wallpaper your space,” Shea explains, “think in terms of pillows, a rug, or even a lamp shade can have a pattern to it.”
For the occasion, Shea chose to forgo her usual dress ensemble and opted instead for a navy Veronica Beard pantsuit with gold buttons and nude Christian Louboutin slingback pumps. Shop the entire look below.
A big thank you to Helen Healey for all of the photography.

While in New York, Syd and Shea took the opportunity to stop by one of their favorite restaurants, Ralph Lauren’s Polo Bar in Midtown. The establishment is a storied one, as before it became The Polo Bar it was La Côte Basque, a see-and-be-seen enclave once frequented by the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy. The hotspot was reimagined in 2015 bringing in all the classic touches you’d expect from Mr. Lauren—aged leather and hammered brass, oak herringbone floors and a green marble fireplace surround. Shop the dress she wore to The Polo Bar below, as well as a few favorites inspired by the shopping the pair did around New York City.
