Episode Four of Dream Home Makeover takes Shea and the design team to Charleston, Utah, a small hamlet outside of Salt Lake City. Studio McGee clients Darin and Sarah renovated the entry and living room of their “old pioneer home,” Shea explains, to reflect the history of the house, eliciting loads of cozy and colorful cottage vibes. “We’re going updated Little House on the Prairie,” she adds.

On the walls throughout the entirety of the space are two colors—the dark blue-green color is Riverway by Sherwin-Williams and the cream is Timeless by Clare. The home, though not overly large is footprint, is lucky to have a dedicated entryway. Shea and the design team took advantage of the nook and styled it in a way that tied it into the rest of the space—the paint is carried through to the living room built-in cabinets—while maximizing storage. In addition to a wall of hooks, a dresser from McGee & Co.’s vintage collection provides ample places to store hats and gloves. A charcoal-colored limestone tile from Ann Sacks visually separates the entry from the living space, while a willow-adorned William Morris wallpaper finishes the walls from wood paneling trim to ceiling. Set up as a side sitting area of the home’s living room is a wall of built-in cabinetry featuring the client’s own piano. “We devoted half the wall space to wrap-around library shelving,” Shea notes, to accommodate the client’s expansive book collection, “giving the overall feeling of being enveloped by books and study.” The cabinetry features unlacquered brass pulls and a brass gallery rail. The piano’s bench is an upholstered version with a neutral ticking stripe from Studio McGee’s collection with Target, Studio McGee x Threshold, draped in a sheepskin sourced from Jenni Kayne Home. Antique brass swing arms sconces flank the piano, with brass flush mount fixtures overhead.

Across from the piano Shea and the design team filled a vacant corner with a small game table (a marble top and French bistro base), and two velvet swivel chairs, “so they can turn and face the living room,” Shea explains.

Moving into the main living space, McGee & Co.’s Youngman Console Table anchors the back of a McGee & Co. Lucille English Roll Arm Sofa in tan performance linen. The McGee & Co. Gemma Chair and a black steel table finish one side of the fireplace, while an antique Windsor spindle chair sourced from Etsy occupies the other. McGee & Co.’s patterned Belleville Rug helps to define the living space, topped with an alder wood square coffee table. “To give it that ‘prairie chic’ finishing touch, we added accessories like vintage cowbells, crocks, and books,” Shea adds.
