In design, bathrooms can often be overlooked, because they are typically not the focus of the home’s aesthetic. However, there are few easy styling tips that can transform your bathroom into a space you love to spend time in.

At Studio McGee, we are big fans of using rugs in any space we can. They help to ground the room, define the aesthetic, and they go a long way in making a space feel warm and welcoming. If you’re looking through our portfolio, it’s likely you’ll have a hard time finding a space where we haven’t used a rug, and the bathroom is no exception. Shea and the design team love to style a rug in the bathroom. It adds warmth through texture and visual interest with color and pattern, and who doesn’t like starting their morning routine with softness underfoot. While the decision to use a rug in a bathroom or not is entirely up to you, there are a few guidelines we follow when picking a rug for the bathroom. Each bathroom is unique, so here are the things that we consider when choosing whether or not to place a rug in a bathroom.

Kids Bathroom

From our perspective, incorporating a rug into a kids’ bathroom design is all about balancing functionality and style. If you have kids, you know that they’re messy! While a rug can add warmth and visual interest to the space, it’s essential to consider practicality, especially in a high-traffic area like a bathroom for the littles. We recommend opting for a durable outdoor/indoor rug or a vintage rug that can withstand the inevitable spills and splashes. However, if you don’t have the space or you are using a step stool at the sink then we suggest skipping the rug entirely.

When designing a compact bathroom, the initial inclination might be to keep things small and minimal. However, we encourage you to think big instead. Embrace bold choices like covering the walls in wallpaper, opting for a deep, rich paint hue, or making a statement with your tile selection. In our experience, we often forgo rugs in powder rooms, and instead let the bold selections shine.

Primary Bathroom

In a primary bathroom, more often than not we chose to style a rug to add pattern and softness to the space. A runner is a beautiful way to guide the eye along the length of the room and define certain areas, like the vanity. We also like to use a regular rug in front of a bathtub to ground the space and create a focal point.
