The Houston Estate’s Living Spaces

In The Houston Estate, there are two living spaces, casual and formal, for the family to gather. Take a photo tour of the family room and the formal living room below.
Carving out spaces to gather is a fundamental element of designing your home. Sometimes it’s a moody basement den with ample seating for movie night and something it’s refined seating in arrangements meant to encourage conversation. In The Houston Estate, it’s a formal sitting room for hosting and a more relaxed family room for enjoying time spent together. Tour through the home’s two living spaces below.

Formal Living Room
A dressed up space.
In one of the more moodier spaces in the home, Shea and the design team choose to match the drapery with the wall color for a dramatic look. All of the furniture is centered around the fireplace, and around the room you’ll find various seating areas established for different uses like eating, playing games, or conversation. Shea and the design team opted out of painting the built-in cabinetry, instead staining the wood so it resembled a piece of furniture.

Creating groups of furniture according to their functions—conversating, eating, playing games—helps define the room and aids in flow.

Family Room
A more casual space.
“This room embodies the livability and beauty we seek to create in all the homes that we design,” says Shea of The Houston Estate’s more casual family room. The room’s seating options are a mix of new, more modern pieces and a few that were found on sourcing trips in Round Top, Texas. A curved back dresses up the sectional and mimics the curves seen throughout the rest of the home.

Crypton is a type of high-performance upholstery fabric, like what is on the family room sectional, that has been treated to repel stains, moisture, and bacteria.
