Eight Fashion Trends for 2022
What to look for in the upcoming year
07 January 2022 -
As 2022 kicks off…
I’ve got my eye on upcoming trends, both in the design and fashion worlds. The New Year ushers in a time to both reflect on the past year and look forward to all the upcoming months have to offer. For our aesthetic-centric world, the team is always looking to design swings and shifts for inspiration not only in work, but also for personal fashion and style. Interior and style trends so often mirror one another, and it’s fun to find the similarities and see how they can be worked into our own lives. While “trend” can be a polarizing word to use when defining personal style, I like to think of it in broad terms; knowing a look can come, go, or stay for years ahead. Whether it’s pattern play, or layering up in elevated knits or athleisure, here is a round-up of this year’s looks I’m excited to try.

No. 1. Winter whites
Long gone is the “rule” that you can’t wear white after Labor Day, and I can get behind this quiet act of rebellion. Soft cream knits and coats are the perfect pieces to cuddle up in during the winter season. Pairing tone-on-tone tops and bottoms for a monochromatic look is tres chic and the perfect trend to try while still staying in your comfort zone. Or make it simple and throw on a gorgeous knit dress, like this, and top with a coat like this.

No. 2. When more is more
Straight-off the runway, the oversized and loose looks are here to stay, and I’m not complaining. I love seeing the exaggerated proportions paired with tailoring, like a voluminous sleeve paired with a waist-defining detail. Ease into the style with a wide-leg pant (I particularly love this crisscross button trend), or an oversized blazer that instantly lends a touch of modern style to any outfit.

No. 3. Textures in abundance
Nothing says “cozy” for the season quite like knits and textures. This sherpa coat is darling and easy to pair with all my favorite tops this winter. I’m embracing this inclination and leaning into romantic materials and textures, like pleated tops and smocked dresses. Or layering in some fringe for a cool take on the style.

No. 4. Nostalgic prints and patterns
The pattern-on-pattern trend continues to thrive (one I love to see executed in the design world) and is taking a hold in fashion. While it’s a little easier to mix pattern scale and size in a room, I’m taking note and bringing more feminine prints into my wardrobe, like this dress. This top is also such a sweet pattern and another great take on this style – just enough print to nod to the trend without feeling overwhelming.

No. 5. Fashion-forward athleisure
Praise be, athleisure is still relevant, and in a more elevated way for 2022. I think varsity jackets are going to be an especially big hit this year, and I can’t wait to pair one with my favorite leggings and a new pair of kicks.

No. 6. Wild west refined
Just like adding in a touch of texture can update an outfit, a slight update to everyday booties keeps things on-trend and interesting. Add some variety to your footwear with a pair of western-inspired boots, like these or these. I already own this particular pair and love them – so cute paired with jeans or dresses!

No. 7. Feminine touches
We’ve been watching more feminine shapes and textures come into play more over the past year in interior design and it’s a movement that I see growing into 2022. Pearl touches are such a beautiful and subtle way to add interest to your wardrobe. I especially love seeing pearls layered into jewelry, like this and this, but this sweater and these flats are especially fun.

No. 8. Making a comeback
Silver is on its way back in and this is a shift I’ll be watching closely in design and style. Gold has maintained its position as everyone’s favorite material for years, from jewelry to cabinet hardware, but I’m looking forward to incorporating more silver into our homes and our wardrobes. We are big fans of mixing metals here at Studio McGee, and while you will find that in our design work, isn’t this necklace the perfect way to implement that trend into personal style?
No matter what you pick, I believe all styles are meant to be a fun expression of self. Tone a trend down and make it approachable for your own life, just as you would when designing your home.
