Shea and the design team worked to merge their client’s two diverse styles, creating a home that’s both classic and contemporary. Here are our favorite moments from inside The Houston Estate that illustrate the beautiful tension created when modernity and traditionalism intersect.

What to do as an interior designer when your clients have two different opinions on how to create their dream home? For Shea and the design team, that’s an easy conundrum, as the Studio McGee aesthetic as a whole is built on the idea of merging classic and contemporary. The Houston Estate was a fun opportunity to showcase what Studio McGee is all about. Below, take a photo tour of the spaces in the The Houston Estate that illustrate how to balance modern pieces and classic styling.

“There’s a beautiful tension that comes with pairing different design eras and cultural influences.”

“The client’s heirloom teacup collection was such a fun pairing with an oversized, abstract, contemporary art piece across the room.”

Create interesting furniture pairings in a variety of shapes, tones, and eras.

DESIGN TIP

Balance contemporary furniture (the reupholstered angular chairs) with an antique piece (the wood side table) that introduces an aged material.
